Teen & Adolescent Mental Health Treatment
The teenage years are a period of rapid physical, emotional, and social development. Between academic pressures, social media, and the transition into adulthood, it is entirely normal for adolescents to experience stress and mood swings. However, when worry becomes constant, overwhelming, and interferes with school or friendships, it may be a sign of an underlying mental health condition.

At Suburban Psychiatric Specialists, we specialize in adolescent mental health. We provide a safe, relatable, and non-judgmental environment to help teens understand their emotions and develop healthy coping skills for the future.
Understanding Anxiety in Teens
Anxiety is one of the most common mental health challenges facing adolescents today. It often looks different in teens than it does in adults, manifesting as irritability, sudden drops in grades, or unexplained physical symptoms like stomachaches and headaches.
We treat the full spectrum of anxiety disorders that affect adolescents:
1. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Teens with GAD experience chronic, excessive worry about everyday things. They may stress uncontrollably about their grades, family issues, sports performance, or their future, even when there is no obvious reason to worry.
2. Social Anxiety Disorder
Social media and peer pressure make social anxiety incredibly common in teens. This is an intense, persistent fear of being watched, judged, or humiliated by peers. It often leads to avoiding school, skipping extracurricular activities, or isolating in their bedroom.
3. Panic Disorder
This involves sudden, unexpected episodes of intense fear known as panic attacks. A teen might feel like they cannot breathe, their heart is racing, or they are losing control. Because these attacks are terrifying, teens often develop a secondary fear of having another attack in public.
4. Specific Phobias
This is an intense, irrational fear of a specific object or situation. In adolescents, this can include severe test anxiety, fear of public speaking, fear of driving, or emetophobia (fear of vomiting), which can severely limit their daily activities.
5. Separation Anxiety Disorder
While often associated with younger children, teens can also experience separation anxiety. In adolescence, it typically presents as an overwhelming fear that something tragic will happen to their parents or loved ones while they are apart, leading to clinginess or refusal to leave the house.
Recognizing the Signs Your Teen Needs Help
Teens are notoriously private, making it hard to tell the difference between typical "teenage angst" and a clinical disorder. Look for these warning signs:
-
Refusal to go to school or a sudden drop in academic performance.
-
Quitting sports or activities they used to love.
-
Withdrawing from family and spending all their time in their room.
-
Changes in eating or sleeping habits (sleeping all day or severe insomnia).
-
Frequent, unexplained physical complaints (headaches, nausea).
-
Uncharacteristic outbursts of anger or extreme irritability.
Our Approach to Teen Treatment
We believe in a collaborative approach that respects the teen's growing independence while keeping parents appropriately involved.
-
Psychotherapy (CBT): We teach teens how to identify irrational thoughts and face their fears gradually, building resilience.
-
Medication Management: When therapy alone isn't enough, we carefully prescribe and monitor safe, FDA-approved medications for adolescents to ease severe anxiety or depression.
-
Family Support: We equip parents with the tools they need to support their teen at home without unintentionally enabling their anxiety.
