Insomnia Treatment

Insomnia is more than just a bad night’s sleep; it is a common sleep disorder that makes it difficult to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake up feeling rested. While everyone experiences occasional sleeplessness due to stress, chronic insomnia can severely impact your mood, energy levels, work performance, and overall quality of life.

At Suburban Psychiatric Specialists, we recognize that sleep issues are often intertwined with anxiety, depression, and other conditions. We treat the root cause to help you get the rest you need.

Acute vs. Chronic Insomnia

Understanding the duration of your symptoms helps us determine the best treatment plan.

  • Short-Term (Acute) Insomnia: usually lasts for a few days or weeks. It is often triggered by a specific stressful event, such as a job change, loss of a loved one, or trauma.

  • Long-Term (Chronic) Insomnia: Sleep disruption that occurs at least three nights a week and lasts for three months or more. This type often requires professional intervention as it may be linked to medical conditions or medications.

Signs You May Have a Sleep Disorder

While individual sleep needs vary (most adults need 7–9 hours), the quality of that sleep matters just as much as the quantity. Symptoms include:

  • Difficulty Initiating Sleep: Lying awake for long periods before drifting off.

  • Sleep Maintenance Issues: Waking up frequently during the night or waking up too early and being unable to fall back asleep.

  • Daytime Impairment: Feeling fatigued, irritable, depressed, or anxious during the day.

  • Cognitive Fog: Difficulty paying attention, focusing on tasks, or remembering things.

  • Sleep Anxiety: Developing a persistent worry or dread about bedtime.

How We Treat Insomnia

You do not have to accept exhaustion as your new normal. Our approach focuses on both the biological and behavioral aspects of sleep.

  • Medical Evaluation: We review your history to see if insomnia is a symptom of another condition (like anxiety or depression) or a side effect of medication.

  • Medication Management: When appropriate, we can prescribe safe, effective sleep aids to help break the cycle of sleeplessness and reset your circadian rhythm.

  • Behavioral Strategies: We guide you through sleep hygiene improvements and techniques similar to CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) to change the thoughts and behaviors that disrupt sleep.
